They were approaching the outskirts of San Diego, passing through a valley between charcoal-gray hills covered with yellow grass. Kyna made a brief stop at a strip mall next to the expressway and they were back on the road in five minutes. |

"Say good-bye to the Pacific," Kyna said as she took the ramp that headed away from the ocean. "That's the last we'll see of it this trip." |

A short time later they exited I-8 at a motel in La Mesa. Just before they went inside to get a room, Kyna said, "I just had a thought. If werewolves are real, does that mean that vampires are real too?" |

Cyrus paused with one foot on the ground and the door alarm buzzing. "That's a comforting thought." |
